GS1 is a global organization dedicated to the design and implementation of global standards, and solutions to improve the efficiency and visibility of supply and demand chains globally and across sectors. GS1 offers a diversified portfolio of products, solutions and services, including the GS1 System of standards (the most widely used standards system in the world). GS1’s portfolio ranges from GS1 Bar Codes to GS1 eCom (electronic commerce tools), GS1 GDSN (data synchronization), EPC global (using RFID technologies) and traceability. GS1 is the global language business

A few history...

GS1 is an organization represented in more than 104 countries world-wide managing the GS1 System.

In 1974 manufactures and distributors from 12 European countries formed an ad-hoc council in order to examine the possibility of developing a standard article numbering system for Europe, similar to the Universal Product Code (UPC) system already set up in the USA by the Uniform Code Council (UCC).
In 1977 a non-profit body "European Article Numbering Association" (EAN) was created to develop a UPC compatible system.

EAN system spread through out the Europe. For this reason and more the European Article Numbering Association acquired an international status and became the International Article Numbering Association. Lately in 2005 EAN became GS1.

The EAN/UCC system is used in all productive and non productive areas. The advantage of its application, in the countries with a high development of technology, is used: in trade, production, warehousing, health care, publication, banks, library, laboratories, in office etc.

Nowadays, more than 1.000.000 companies from 156 countries of the world are members of international organization that manage the EAN/UCC system and apply global standard that aims the improvement of efficiency in supply chain.

GS1 operates in more than 20 and sectors in 104 countries and address every aspect of the supply chain driven by more than a million companies who execute more than five billion transactions a day.

The membership of Albania

In 29th of may 2006 in the assemble meeting of GS1 organization, Albania was excepted as e member organization of this global organization, where where are present 104 member from all the world.
The membership of Albania in the global organization GS1 was achieved by a initiator of Albanian business, especially from the food trading sector.
With the official accepting of Albania in this global organization GS1, our country had this prefix 530.
Actually in Albania are more than 80 company that use the standards of GS1 system, which has this unique number of the company.
The official name of this organization in Albania is GS1 Albania and it is e registered name in the court of Tirana and in the Tax Bord Authority. This organization acts in agree with Albanian rules and the requests of the organization in Albania as a non profiting organization in the business Albanian service.
With this new entry office in Albania, effective from 01/06/2006 the Albanian business takes more possibilities to use the standards of GS1 system and with a lower cost.
The goal of GS1 is to improve supply chain management within a wide range of sectors and increase the added value for both trading partners and consumers.
