Why is training on GS1's Core Business so important?

Ensuring all GS1 employees have ready access to GS1’s Core Business Training provides an essential foundation for working together within the GS1 community.

It offers a comprehensive understanding of the shared GS1 history which allow us all to better understand the complexity of today and the challenges of tomorrow.

“On June 26, 1974, the first product with a bar code was scanned at a check-out counter. It was a 10-pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chewing gum marked with a U.P.C. Bar Code.”

The rest is history!

Yet the history of GS1 has been built on solid foundations that have allowed the GS1 System to evolve and develop over time in a consistent manner.

The GS1 System has become more complex with more services, more solutions, more data carriers, and more …well more EVERYTHING really – and these developments add extra value and benefits to the GS1 community everyday and everywhere. It also leads to increasing complexity, which in turn increases the need to focus on the Core Business of GS1.

Having a clear understanding of the Core Business helps all GS1 employees to lead the implementation of the GS1 in a consistent and integrated way.

We all know the old question: “Do you have ten years experience – or do you have one year’s experience that is ten years old?”

To help ensure that our experience - and training - today will still be valid and adding value ten years from now, it is important for all – and particularly those new to GS1 – to have access to training material that gives them easy and ready understanding of what lies at the Core of GS1.

To this end, the GS1 Learn website provides eLearn and Classroom access to all the Core Technologies of GS1 today.

This covers our Identification Keys, BarCodes, eCOM, GDSN, EPC, and increasingly the solutions and industry process they support like Traceability and Healthcare. Since its launch at the GS1 Forum in February 2008, almost 300 GS1 Associates have successfully completed the online eLearning modules composing the BarCode Certificate. This provides a solid foundation to all working with GS1 Core standards helping them – and the organizations for which they work - today and in the future.

Why not add yourself (or a new colleague) to those GS1 Associates from around the world who have successfully completed a course?
